Alice Miller was born in 1982 in Wellington, New Zealand, and earned an MA from Victoria University and an MFA from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. She has received the Royal Society of New Zealand Manhire Prize, the BNZ Katherine Mansfield Premier Award for fiction, and the Landfall Essay prize. Miller lives in Vienna, Austria.

Earth

The armies of the earth’ve lit a line of fires

Today, they rerouted a river
to forge a slip between two mountains

Trees and chunks of earth
showered the local village, wood

crunched wood, brown water bulged
and dust burst over screams
