People (Interlude)

The woman stood alone at the end of the gallery. She wore a close-fitting cream-colored dress and a white cloche hat and dark sunglasses that meant don’t talk to me. She must have been rich. The whole look had the effect of calling attention to her: she was a person wanting to be noticed as a person not wanting to be noticed. The thought made his brain itch a little.
